Fwd: The calendar for the EP Sakharov Prize for 2013
by Erik Josefsson 17 Jul '13

17 Jul '13

Hej listan. //Erik -------- Original Message -------- Subject: The calendar for the EP Sakharov Prize for 2013 Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2013 12:11:55 +0200 From: Erik Josefsson <erik.hjalmar.josefsson(a)gmail.com> To: edri-members(a)mailman.edri.org Nominations for Sakharov Prize can be made by at least 40 MEPs. Here's the calendar, the form and the rules: http://erikjosefsson.eu/sites/default/files/SAKHAROV_2013_EN.pdf (excerpt below) Currently there is less than zero interest in nominating Snowden for the Sakharov Prize in EPP, ALDE and ECR. Therefore, this project is huge. It's probably impossible to succeed. To be successful it requires: 1) the first signature to be an EPP MEP and the right EPP MEP 2) the following 10 signatures to be EPP too 3) the following 30 to be a mix of EPP+ALDE+ECR *No S&D, Greens/EFA, GUE/NGL, EFD or NI signatures allowed.** * Best regards. //Erik *Deadline for nomination of candidates * *Thursday, 12 September 2013 at 17h00* Strasbourg Presentation of nominees in a joint meeting of AFET/DEVE/DROI (open to all Members) Monday or Tuesday, 16 or 17 September 2013 Brussels, tbc *Vote* *on three finalists in a joint meeting of AFET/DEVE* *Monday, 30 September 2013*, Brussels Conference of Presidents' decision on final Laureate Thursday, 10 October 2013, Strasbourg Joint AFET/DEVE/DROI meeting with 2013 Laureate(s) Monday, 18 November 2013, at 19h00 Strasbourg Prize award ceremony in plenary Tuesday 19 or Wednesday, 20 November 2013 at 12h00 Strasbourg

Hur mycket gillar vi VPN?
by Linus Nordberg 17 Jul '13

17 Jul '13

Hej!

Missing ACTA documents
by Andreas Jonsson 04 Jul '13

04 Jul '13

Dear Court/Registry, Following a dialogue with both the EP and the EC[1], we turn to you to better understand the ACTA process. As the Commission made it clear in June last year that a negative vote on ACTA would not stop the proceedings before the Court[2] we think there is an overwhelming public interest in disclosure of the document that, according to a Commission spokesperson[3], made the Commission withdraw its referral. The case has been referred to as "A-1/12". Would it be possible for the Court/Registry to answer the following questions? 1) Does the document "the question asked by the Court of Justice to the Commission in case A-1/12" that the Commission refers to in its email[4] exist? 2) Is that document a "procedural document" or a document of another type? 3) Did the Court notify the Parliament this document? If so, when? Was the document notified a person, a Committee Representative, the Legal Service of the EP, the Parliament as an institution or the President? 4) Did the Court notify the Commission this document? If so, when? To whom was it addressed? 5) Has the Commission or the Parliament asked for permission to make this document public? Would such permission be necessary for its publication? 6) Was the Court informed of the Commissions position that a negative vote on ACTA would not stop the proceedings before the Court[2]? Thank you in advance for your kind help. Fwd: Re: [at4am] Information about at4am during RMLL
by Erik Josefsson 29 Jun '13

//Erik -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [at4am] Information about at4am during RMLL Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2013 18:35:29 +0200 From: Philip Luppens Reply-To: Automatic Tool for AMendments Mailing List To: Nicolas Pettiaux CC: Automatic Tool for AMendments Mailing List On Thu, Jun 27, 2013 at 5:59 PM, Nicolas Pettiauxwrote: 2013/6/27 Philip Luppens: Dear Philip, > The idea is that I refuse to call a 1.0 before all loose > ends have been resolved, even if that means a delay of several weeks/months. We'll see where it takes us, and I > hope to get some honest criticism and feedback about what works, and what > doesn't. at least we could let the participants of RMLL/LSM know that their honest criticism and feedback is expected. Any feedback is welcome. Due to the nature of the project, the assumed adopters are not exactly known for being a) very vocal nor b) very quick in their adoption. We're low on resources, but we aim high - even if just to develop a vision that can be shared for the future.  Wouldn't an access to a running instance of at4am, filled with data would help the community to work with  at4am ? Would it be possible to announce such a thing ? It's perfectly possible to run your own instance of AT4AM, backed by for example a PostgreSQL database (which is what I'm running locally). The instances on at4am.org <http://at4am.org>, however, are backed by an in-memory database, so whenever we do a (nightly) deployment, the backend is wiped clean. Now, I have been thinking (a lot) about federation & importing of trusted content, but until we can convince the EP to share its published proposals in a more open format (preferably in Akoma Ntoso (AN)), this will be limited to those source text that are converted (semi)-manually. Afaik, the AN transformation in the EP is not yet entirely into place, and the existing XML schema in use is too limited and would prove quite challenging to transform automatically (of course, once again Italy shows us how it's done by providing pretty much all their documents in AN).  > What kind of information are you looking for, exactly? Anything that would attract the attention to many people from France, Germany, Belgium, Spain and elsewhere who try hard to convince their parlements and governements to use free software and who could push them to use at4am. Well, at this moment we seem to have some interest coming from Italy. I'm not familiar at all with the procedures nor the way of amending or drafting in any of the aforementioned countries, but I do believe the core is flexible enough to handle those cases as well. The only problem is the availability of source texts ... I'm not entirely sure what would be of interest to those attending the workshop; we do aim to provide in time (given enough resources), a full turn-key parliamentary solution (drafting, marking, amending, voting, consolidating, ... ), but this will remain a distant dream until we get more backing. There's also the difference in target audience: we aim to provide governments and large organisations with these tools, but they might just as well be used to improve legislation by allowing citizens to participate actively, and even for lobbyists to make their lives easier (although no-one wants to admit that publicly, of course).  There will also be a political rond table at RMLL/LSM onTuesday 9 morning with MEP http://schedule2013.rmll.info/programme/plenieres/article/table-ronde-polit… where the topic of at4am could also in few words be discussed. Anything related to AT4AM is considered a step forward, so yes, if possible, try to raise the topic.  As I understand it, at4am will be a free software that could help parliaments to collaborate on the tools they use, but also allow the citizens to follow more closely the evolution of the legislative texts. All this is for me very important. It will become more and more important as more people want to participate in the making of laws, as they demand more transparency and insight into the legislative processes, and as they demand a more streamlined and cost-effective government. Our tool is but once tiny building block in getting governments to adopt a new strategy and to migrate away from closed source & proprietary formats (I do start to sound like a political activist now, don't I? *sigh*).  > By the way, I originally had this workshop planned on the 12th of July - did > it move? I don't know if it was announced earlier on July 12th. This JURI session at the EP has as last talk at 17.20 - 17.35 « The experience of the EP with free and open source software» Giancarlo Vilella, Director-General, DG ITEC Mr Vilella could speak about at4am too. Just a guess. I'm assuming he will. And 'paperless'. Or 'papersmart', as our friends from the UN so eloquently put it. //Erik -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [EPFSUG] Your input needed: Questions for panel w/ Eben Moglen, RMS, 4 MEPs Date: Fri, 28 Jun 2013 22:49:12 +0200 From: Karsten Gerloff <gerloff(a)fsfeurope.org> Reply-To: Karsten Gerloff <gerloff(a)fsfeurope.org> To: epfsug(a)epfsug.eu Hi everyone, as mentioned here before, on July 9 at the Libre Software Meeting / RMLL in Brussels, we're organising a big panel discussion on "Technology, Power and Freedom": http://fsfe.org/events/2013/rmll-2013.html After the news about wide-ranging communications surveillance we've heard in recent weeks, this topic is arguably even more pressing than it was before. But we want to look at the long term: What do we need to change in politics and technology today to build a better world tomorrow? For this discussion we're bringing some of the Free Software movement's leading minds together with the people who represent us in the European Parliament. We're extremely happy to have a list of first-rate participants: Eben Moglen (Columbia University / Software Freedom Law Center) Richard M Stallman (FSF) Judith Sargentini (MEP Greens/EFA) Marc Tarabella (MEP S&D - tbc) Nils Torvalds (MEP ALDE) Ioannis A. Tsoukalas (MEP EPP) I'd like your input: What should we ask these people? What are your most urgent questions on technology and politics? Please post your questions here, and we'll gather them and get them to Brussels. GNOME Privacy Fundraising
by Emil Tullstedt 28 Jun '13

28 Jun '13

FYI: GNOME-projektet har för närvarande en fundraising där pengarna går till att öka möjligheten till privacyinställningar och privacy-per-default i GNOME. https://www.gnome.org/friends/ Lista på projekt GNOME-teamet jobbar med är: - application containment - enhanced disk encryption support *- Tor integration* - user control over diagnostic reporting features - robust VPN routing - application integration with system-wide privacy settings - controls for how GNOME devices are identified on local networks - anti-phishing features for Web, GNOME's web browser Förutom sista punkten (vem tusan använder Epiphany?) så känns det ju värt att donera några dollar till GNOME-teamet för att uppmuntra resterande punkter. Ha det bra! -- Emil Tullstedt

Flash-proxy
by Linus Nordberg 27 Jun '13

27 Jun '13

Hej listan! "Still no access to ACTA documents"
by Erik Josefsson 21 Jun '13

21 Jun '13

Om inte annat så har man lärt sig försöka :-) //Erik * ************************************************************* Link to **EDRi-gram 11.12**:* http://edri.org/edrigram/number11.12/no-acccess-ACTA-documents Still no access to ACTA documents Today, 19 June 2013, the European Commission answered within the time limit it had set for itself to answer to DFRI's requests for ACTA documents. On 29 May 2013 the Commission extended the time limit with 15 working days arguing the "new time limit" was statutory under Article 7(3) of Regulation (EC) No 1049/2001. The Commission explained it had to extend the period by 15 working days because its reply to DFRI was "circulating for signature by the hierarchy" and that "circulating for signature by the hierarchy" is an "exceptional case" under the same article. The answer EDRi member DFRI received today was not signed by anyone but the sender of the email. Neither did it contain any ACTA documents. The Commission argues that: "The question of the Court to the Commission, being a procedural document, does not fall within the scope of Regulation 1049/2001 as Article 15(3) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFUE) specifies that the Court is only subject to obligations on Transparency when exercising their administrative tasks. This has as consequence that the document itself can't be disclosed by the Commission."
